Fiddler Crab

Implement this lesson:

  • Use this lesson when discussing animal ecosystems, habitats, or other environmental TEKs. This lesson can be used as part of a larger local theme i.e. Oceans Week. It can also be used for a crab themed day. The duration of this lesson can vary based on student and teacher needs.
  • During measurement unit

Learning Objective:

Students will use their knowledge of measurement to measure different parts of the fiddler crab
and record their findings.

Overview:

Fiddler Crabs (Genus Uca)

Fiddler crabs are tiny coastal crabs known for the males’ one oversized claw, which they wave like a fiddle—hence the name! These crabs are found along mudflats, marshes, and sandy shores in the Gulf of Mexico, including Texas bays and estuaries.

Appearance and Behavior

  • Very small: body (carapace) usually around 1–2 inches wide
  • Males have one large claw and one small claw; females have two small claws
  • The large claw is used to attract mates and warn other males, not for fighting or feeding
  • Body colors can range from brown, tan, grey, to blue-ish tones, depending on species
  • Live in burrows they dig in sand or mud, especially in intertidal zones
  • Active during low tide and hide in burrows when the tide comes in

Diet and Feeding

  • Omnivores that feed on algae, bacteria, and decaying plant matter
  • Use their small claws to scoop sand or mud into their mouths
  • Filter out the food and spit out the rest
  • Spend most of their time feeding near their burrows

Life Cycle and Reproduction

  • Males wave their large claw to attract females during mating season
  • After mating, females carry fertilized eggs under their abdomen
  • Eggs hatch into tiny plankton-like larvae that drift in the water
  • After several molts, the young settle on the ground and grow into adult crabs
  • Lifespan is typically 1–2 years

Habitat and Range

  • Found in salt marshes, tidal flats, mangroves, and sandy shores
  • Common along the Gulf Coast, including Texas, and up the Atlantic Coast
  • Prefer areas where they can dig burrows for protection, moisture, and temperature control
  • Some species are more adapted to mud, others to sand

Conservation Status

  • Not endangered—fiddler crabs are very common in many coastal areas
  • However, their populations can be affected by:
    • Habitat destruction from coastal development
    • Pollution and oil spills
    • Rising sea levels and climate change

Interesting Facts

  • There are over 100 species of fiddler crabs worldwide
  • The large claw can weigh up to half the male’s body weight
  • If a male loses its large claw, it grows back on the opposite side
  • Males will sometimes “fake wave” to appear stronger to rivals
  • Their burrows can go up to 2 feet deep, helping them survive heat and predators
  • Fiddler crabs are important to the ecosystem because they aerate the soil and help recycle nutrients

Procedure:

1. Do a quick warm up by reading Does a Fiddler Crab Fiddle?
2. Show an actual fiddler crab and talk about how they may be found in our waters.
3. Do a measurement activity where the students measure paper fiddler crabs and record
their findings.
4. Compare measurements and share findings.

Evaluation:

Evaluate students based on their participation in whole group discussions and their accuracy
when measuring.

  • Students create their own model of a crab using maker space materials
