Octopus

Implement this lesson:

Use this lesson when discussing animal ecosystems, habitats, or other environmental TEKs. This lesson can be used as part of a larger local theme i.e. Oceans Week. It can also be used for a octopus themed day. The duration of this lesson can vary based on student and teacher needs.

Learning Objective:

Students will be able to learn about one of the most interesting animals found in saltwater habitats, the octopus. They will create an art project using their knowledge.

Overview

The only octopus commonly found in Texas waters is the Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris). It lives for about a year to a year and a half and can grow up to four feet long. As the name suggests, this species is found in many places, especially in warm or mild climates. Still, they can be hard to spot because they hide well and can blend into their surroundings on the ocean floor.

Other types of octopuses live in the larger Gulf of Mexico area. These include the Mexican Four-Eyed Octopus (Octopus maya) and the Pygmy Octopus (Octopus joubini). The Mexican Four-Eyed Octopus, also called the red octopus, only lives near the Yucatan Peninsula. Its numbers are going down, likely because of too much fishing. The Pygmy Octopus is very small—only about 15 cm long—and while it lives in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s more common in the Caribbean Sea. Because of their size and rarity, both of these octopuses can be tough to find.

Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris)

The common octopus is one of the most well-known and widespread octopus species. It is known for its intelligence, camouflage, and eight flexible arms. It lives in warm, shallow oceans and is famous for its problem-solving skills, color-changing skin, and ability to squeeze through tiny spaces.

Appearance and Behavior

  • Body (mantle) length: up to 25 cm (10 inches)
  • Arm span: can reach up to 1 meter (3 feet) across
  • Body is soft, rounded, and lacks bones
  • Has eight arms, each lined with rows of powerful suction cups
  • Skin can change color and texture to blend in with surroundings
  • Moves by crawling, jet propulsion, or swimming with its arms trailing behind
  • Has three hearts and blue blood

Diet and Feeding

  • Eats crabs, shrimp, clams, fish, and other small marine animals
  • Uses its sharp beak to break into shells and eat prey
  • Can inject paralyzing venom into its prey
  • Often hunts at night and uses ambush and stealth techniques
  • Known to use tools (like coconut shells or rocks) to hide or capture prey

Life Cycle and Reproduction

  • Solitary animals—only come together to mate
  • Males use a special arm to transfer spermatophores (packets of sperm) to the female
  • After mating, females lay hundreds to thousands of eggs in a protected den
  • The female guards and cleans the eggs until they hatch
  • Does not eat while protecting eggs and dies shortly after they hatch
  • Hatchlings are tiny versions of adults and drift with plankton until they grow

Habitat and Range

  • Found in tropical and temperate waters around the world
  • Common in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and parts of the Pacific
  • Prefers rocky reefs, coral, seagrass beds, and sandy sea floors
  • Lives in dens or crevices, often building “octopus gardens” by arranging rocks and shells

Conservation Status

  • Not currently endangered—listed as Least Concern
  • Populations are stable but affected by:
    • Overfishing in some areas
    • Habitat destruction
    • Pollution and climate change
  • Common in both wild catch and aquaculture (farmed) in some countries

Interesting Facts

  • Considered one of the most intelligent invertebrates
  • Can open jars, solve mazes, and remember solutions
  • Uses ink clouds to distract predators and escape
  • Can regrow lost arms over time
  • Each arm may have its own control center—they can act semi-independently
  • Lifespan is short, usually 1–2 years

  1. Introduce octopuses by asking what students know about them. Write what students say down in a possible KWL chart.
  2. Watch a video, read a book, or use slideshow to teach students about octopuses.
  3. Complete one of the various art projects
  4. Read a book on octopuses
  5. Possibly finish KWL chart
